A former real estate agent is facing a lengthy legal battle after he was accused of stabbing a woman in broad daylight when she opened the door to her multimillion dollar home.
Matthew Brian Ramsay is facing a charge of causing grievous bodily harm to a person with intent to murder.
Police allege the 46-year-old stabbed a woman in the chest after she answered the door of her $4.5m home in the exclusive Sydney suburb of Dover Heights.
Mr Ramsay allegedly plunged a 20cm knife into the woman’s chest in broad daylight around noon on August 8.
Police claim he said “I’m really sorry” to the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, before he caused a 4cm puncture wound close to her heart.
The former prestigious real estate agent withdrew the blade and then swung the knife at her again but missed stabbing her a second time, according to police allegations.
The woman managed to open the front door and a fierce struggle ensued, police claim.
Mr Ramsay was arrested a short time after the alleged stabbing while driving along Campbell Parade in Bondi.
Footage from the arrest appears to show a police officer pointing a weapon at the 46-year-old and yelling at him to “get down on the ground” at the lights of the busy street.
On Monday, Mr Ramsay was represented by his lawyer Andrew O’Brien in Waverley Court where it was revealed there was a legal dispute about a subpoena that delayed proceedings.
The court heard the subpoena was issued last year but there are issues that need to be “ventilated”.
The prosecutor noted “the time it’s taken for this matter to come up for argument” after the subpoena issue was first mentioned in November last year.
Both the prosecution and defence have filed submissions in anticipation of a two-hour hearing of the issues on February 7 before Magistrate Ross Hudson.
Mr Ramsay is believed to be residing at a rehabilitation facility in Swan Bay, where he was ordered to remain when he was granted bail in September.
